On August 23rd - 27th, Bill and Deanna Cook will be taking on a rim to rim hike of the Grand Canyon. "According to the Rim to Rim Club (https://www.facebook.com/rimtorim ) and their logo KOKO, which stands for Keep On Keeping On, regardless of how you start, you must climb out. For many, that will mean to keep on keeping on despite the pain, fatigue, etc. One of the best things about this hike is the time you get to think & reflect while you keep on keeping on. This can also be a metaphor for life. Many things can and will knock us down similar to the pain, fatigue, heat, dehydration, etc., of a rim to rim hike and there will be many mountains/climbs that we must overcome to reach the top of anything."
As Bill and I hike the canyon we ask you to not only pray for us but pray for the families we minister to in Guatemala. We have chosen to hike the canyon for recreation but our friends in the mountains of Guatemala walk the many steep hills and long distances as their only form of transportation in search of food and water for daily sustenance. We will be carrying heavy packs with 4 days worth of snacks and water. The amount of snacks (energy bars, etc) that we are taking with us is more than many of the children that we work with will eat in 2 weeks. Many of the children have oatmeal that is so watered down that you could drink it and a couple of tortillas a day.
We would like to use this hike to raise awareness of the hunger and suffering of the children we work with in Guatemala through Oak Foundation International. Our hunger and suffering during this hike is nothing compared to their daily struggles. The rim to rim hike is 24.9 miles, hiking down the North Kaibab Trail (14.3 miles) and hiking up the Bright Angel Trail (9.6 miles) with a 2 day rest at Phantom Ranch at the bottom of the Grand Canyon.
If you would like to sponsor us any amount per mile (for example $1 per mile which equals $24.90), you can go to our website www.oakfoundationinternational.com and click on the donate tab across the top where you can make a donation through PayPal. All donations are tax deductible and 100 percent of the proceeds will go towards purchasing food to feed the 46 children we currently work with in Guatemala.
